Fatman (2020) - Commentary Track

12/23/2021
"Within these Santa films were bound the strength and will to bring holiday cheer around the world. But they were, all of them, deceived, for another Santa film was made..." We enjoyed (is that the right word?) our holiday-themed commentary for One Magic Christmas (you know...the one were the dad gets shot. in. the. face.) so much we decided to do another one! 2020 was a weird year, and it produced an even weirder Santa Claus movie: Fatman, Starring Mel Gibson as Santa (you read that right). Only Frank has seen this one beforehand, so we're all in for a treat. Hit up Peacock, rent it on the Blockbusters of the Internet, settle in with some booze and tag along for this wonky sleigh ride. One Shall Stand. Three Shall Fall. It's the thrilling conclusion to our Chris Kringle King of the Ring! To recap, all four of us are going head-to-head-to-head-to-head, each having chosen what we each deem to be the ultimate Santa Claus film depiction. This week we cover our final two challengers and determine the ultimate Claus. Miracle on 34th Street (1994) - Peter York Elf (2003) - Connor Lynch Subscribe and rate us wherever you found us! Santa Showdown - The Santa Clause (1994) and Klaus (2019)

12/10/2021
Four Santas enter. Only one leaves. Ho Ho H'oh no! Happy Holidays everyone. The boys at Fix-a-Flick are once again back on to talk about what the Christmas season is all about: competition. All four of us are going head-to-head-to-head-to-head in a sleigh bell smackdown, each having chosen what we each deem to be the ultimate Santa Claus film depiction. Because of the size of this yule tidal wave, this episode is only going to focus on the first two contenders: The Santa Clause (1994) - Matt Conrad Klaus (2019) - Frank James Tune in next week for the epic conclusion where we all vote after making our cases to determine which Santa reigns supreme. 007 Guilty Pleasures: Thunderball (1965) & Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

11/23/2021
"Do you expect me to talk?" Spooky Season is over, pumpkin spice has completely permeated the air, and the Holidays are just around the corner. You know what that means; it's time to give thanks to our favorite British spy. The name's Bond. James Bond. This year we each highlighted a personal favorite that might not be well remembered. Frank went dove deep to nominate Thunderball while Tomorrow Never Dies left Matt black, white, and read all over. We also give our first impressions on No Time to Die, but kept it brief. Deep Rising (1998)

10/28/2021
FULL. SCREAM. AHEAD. The crescendo of this year's Halloween mini-series - Deep Rising, where a crew of mercenaries planning to hijack a cruise ship shows up to realize something got to the ship first: a gargantuan tentacled...thing? Idk, it's not a squid and it's not an octopus. Whatever, it drinks people and that's all you need to know. Hop aboard to watch store-brand Harrison Ford and a crew of murderers consisting entirely of "Oh That Guy"'s tangle with a vicious killing machine. We're joined once again by Peter and Connor, making this yet another official episode of an unofficial podcast, No Flicks Given. Directed by Stephen Sommers (right before he did The Mummy) and scored by the legendary Jerry Goldsmith, Deep Rising comes close to hitting that so-bad-it's-good tier of high octane thrill rides. Happy Halloween to everybody! We hope you've enjoyed the torture we've put ourselves through watching these 90s creature features. It's all for you! Subscribe and rate us wherever you found us! The Relic (1997)

10/20/2021
" What heads we were able to salvage from the Santos Morales were pretty decomposed, but they all were missing their hypothalamus... es." Let's talk about the kathoga in the room. For the first half of our NO FLICKS GIVEN series with Fix-a-Flick hosts Connor & Peter, Frank decided to punish us. Is it a murder mystery? A monster slasher? If 78% of the frame weren't too dark to see, we might have been able to answer that question. As to it's quality...well, maybe just tune in. Subscribe and rate us wherever you found us! Questions? Trick 'r Treat (2007)

10/15/2021
The one night a year where we can pretend to be the scariest thing we think of. "Winds in the east... there's a mist comin' in... like somethin' is brewin'... and 'bout to begin..." This week, we take a look at an oft-forgotten, direct-to-video release that might've become a modern classic if it debuted in the streaming era. We won't bury the lede here, Trick 'r Treat should be in your Halloween film rotation ASAP. Wanna know why? Turn off the lights, spike your hot cider, and tune in as we make our case for why Sam should be the mascot of Spooky Season. Subscribe and rate us wherever you found us! Questions? Comments? Evolution (2001)

9/23/2021
No guest for this one (there's no one we can think of that we hate enough to make them watch this trash movie). Welcome to what is hopefully the last conversation ANYONE will have on the 2001 film Evolution, a bargain bin Ghostbusters rip-off that doesn't check a single box to be worth a revisit. Sorry this is sounding harsher than I mean it - you gotta understand, we just watched this film, recording a full hour talking about it, then had to spend time editing that conversation, so we've been down here way too long. Evolution is a 2001 American comic (supposedly) science (supposedly) fiction (thank god) film (debatable) directed by Ivan Reitman. It stars David Duchovny, Orlando Jones, Seann William Scott, Julianne Moore, and Ted Levine. It was released by DreamWorks Pictures in the United States and by Columbia Pictures internationally. The plot of the film follows college professor Ira Kane (Duchovny) and geologist Harry Block (Jones), who investigate a meteorite crash in Arizona. They discover that the meteorite harbors extraterrestrial lifeforms, which are evolving very quickly into large, diverse and outlandish creatures. Subscribe and rate us wherever you found us! Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)

8/19/2021
A midwestern American in the 1300s does medieval battle against the slimiest of bearded slimeballs and his horrifying mom/witch. This week we revisit a forgotten blockbuster, the 2nd biggest movie of 1991 after Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Kevin Costner stars as the fabled Robin of Locksley, in this dark retelling a veteran of the Crusades returned home to find Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham poised to claim the throne of England. With one of the greatest movie themes and one of the worst British accents, the Gi5 boys sit through a severe mess, coming close-to-but-never-quite-reaching the status of guilty pleasure. Enjoy. Also, one thing we forgot to mention in air - In the beginning Marian's brother, after having been locked away in prison for 5 years, gives Robin his family ring as he dies...Where was he hiding that ring?? Joining us for his third appearance, the one-and-only (which I'm realizing we say about every guest) Mike Lacy. Lacy has a (fucking still) forthcoming podcast centered around the filmography of one Thomas Cruise, so be sure to keep an eye (and ear) out for that. Days of Thetan: A Mission into the Impossible Tom Cruise, available soon where ever you get your podcasts.

The Natural (1984)

8/6/2021
Things sure turned out different. In what way? Different. Our summer hours continue as we tackle one of its dog-day classics. For 40 years we've lived with the idea that it could be the best in the genre. Friend of the pod, baseball fan, (and member of the Matt CClub) Matt Cowan joins us to revisit this pastoral classic. Is it a 5-tool film? Did it need to spend more time in AAA Scranton? Will you ever get the theme song out of your head? Only one way to find out. Subscribe and rate us wherever you found us! Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)

6/23/2021
Manners. Maketh. Man. Just a little lax on our release schedule as things open up and weather gets warmer, but we're back with an...old? New. New classic. In a renaissance of comic book movies, this one did well, but didn't seem to percolate like the MCU. Sure, it got a sequel (which we talk about) and is getting a soft reboot (which we're cautiously optimistic about), but what endeared us to the concept in the first place? Maybe tune us in while you sit down with a martini. Gin, of course. Stirred for 10 seconds while glancing at an unopened bottle of vermouth. Subscribe and rate us wherever you found us! Questions? Saturn 3 (1980)

5/21/2021
Kirk Douglas, Farrah Fawcett, and Harvey Keitel walk into a space station. I forget the rest of the joke, but the punchline involves a robot and cake. Ever heard of this one? Even Matt hadn't, and that's saying something. Our hosts have a lot of questions, but thankfully returning guest Mike Simses (2010: The Year We Make Contact) has the answers. We spend this feature-length episode dissecting the anatomy of a movie that should have been a hit in theory, but serves as a fascinating cautionary tale in practice. The 13th Warrior (1999)

5/3/2021
Antonio Banderas accompanies some Norsemen to stop the attacks by a hellish pack of bloodthirsty invaders. Who lives? Who dies? Who tells their story? Probably Seamus Heaney at some point. We're back after our brief excursion to Starfleet to talk about The 13th Warrior, an often forgotten film, so much so that most people don't even realize it's meant to be a retelling of the epic story of Beowulf. Joining Matt and Frank for this #deepdive is Andrew Radespiel, part-time lawyer and full-time history buff. If you've ever wondered how the first English-language story was written, whether or not mead is halal, or if the Viking lifestyle is for you, here's your chance. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

4/16/2021
Kirk, Spock, Doctor McCoy, and Ensign Ricky must broker peace between the Western Democracy Metaphor and the Eastern Bloc Soviet Metaphor. Hilarity ensues. Also murder. Happy (belated) First Contact Day! No guest this week, but we're covering not only the last original cast Star Trek movie Frank hasn't seen, but the last original cast Star Trek movie ever. Yeah, yeah, we know about Generations, but that's a whole other story. We cover our movie rankings, uncover a strange cameo, and learn that the late, great Chris Plummer can bring it when it comes to Shakespearian (quoting) villains. The Undiscovered Country is finally discovered!

Sinbad's Shazam (1997)

4/1/2021
We bring you our hot take on the 1997 forgotten mess "Shazam", starring Sinbad and Martin Short. Joining us once again is the one-and-only Patrick H. Willems (previously on our episode on The Shadow), who brought us a movie that certainly no one is still talking about. A critical and financial failure, in many ways Shazam was the beginning of the end of Sinbad's Hollywood run. Our hosts dive deep into why that is, what went wrong and more importantly, what in this movie is worth revisiting (if anything). From the rap battle to the climactic showdown with the giant spider, be sure to not miss this epic discussion on one of the low-watermarks of the 1990s. Still, it has its moments. The Mummy Returns (2001)

3/19/2021
Adventurer Rick O'Connell (and his family) race an immortal Egyptian mummy to be the one to destroy the Scorpion King, an insectoid WWE wrestler with Barbie Doll-textured skin hellbent on letting his pet dogs run wild. Joining Matt and Frank today is Mike Ludwig (The Shadow, Independence Day) to talk about 2001's The Mummy Returns, one of the most bonkers big budget sequels of the early 2000s. More action. More explosions. More mummies. More hot air balloons. More double decker buses with the keys apparently in the ignition. We cover it all, the insane plot, the guilty pleasure action, the absolutely piss poor CGI effects in what most would consider Stephen Sommers' last really popular film. Not to mention of the of the greatest adventure scores Hollywood has ever given us. Does the movie stand the test of time? Do the lovable heroes trump the incoherent story? Mystery Men (1999)

3/5/2021
Do you think there's a really angry way I could say I'm sorry? The 90s was a really weird time for everybody, but especially superhero movies. In between nipple-suit Batman and laryngitis Batman, we got Mystery Men. In the same tradition as Austin Powers and Galaxy Quest, this comedian-driven vehicle poked fun at its genre while still appreciating its tropes. Unfortunately, did didn't do too well in the box office. No guest this week, but Frank hadn't seen this one either so there's plenty to talk about (including his strange, irrational hate for Claire Forlani.

Apollo 13 (1995)

2/16/2021
New Year, Same Us. We're back for another season of Give it 5. Houston, we have a podcast. Desperate to save face in light of the embarrassment of admitting he had never seen Apollo 13 (go back and listen to our Backdraft episode), Frank brings Mike Lacy back on to right a great wrong. After Matt sent him a 4k blu ray of it for the holidays, all their fates were pretty much sealed. One of the biggest films of the 90s, and the grandfather to all these space thrillers they make like once a year, Apollo 13 is Ron Howards magnum opus, chronicling the harrowing flight of Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise. It's also the first film that started a new chapter of Tom Hanks films, which we sort of dub the Captain/America's Dad series. It's a fantastic film with spectacular special effects and a magnificent score (by the late James Horner 2 years before he gave us Titanic). Mike Lacy has a forthcoming podcast centered around the filmography of one Thomas Cruise, so be sure to keep an eye (and ear) out for that. Days of Thetan: A Mission into the Impossible Tom Cruise, available soon where ever you get your podcasts.

We're trying something new for this holiday season. Your No Flicks Given heroes are coming face-to-face with one of the worst, my depressing Christmas movies in recent memory: One Magic Christmas. Joined once again by Connor & Peter of the Fix-a-Flick podcast, we give you a Give it 5 first - a commentary track of a truly awful movie experience.
