082 - Hunters of Color and Inclusive Hunting with Jimmy Flatt

4/28/2021
Would you start a movement to fight for something you believe in? My guest this week did just that. Meet Jimmy Flatt, founder of Hunters of Color (HOC). Jimmy is an avid hunter who saw the need for an "inclusion revolution" in hunting to make it safe and welcoming for members of the BIPOC community. And so was born HOC. The mission HOC is “To create a more equitable community for hunters of color by dismantling barriers to entry through educational opportunities, mentorships, and resources for new hunters, in order to promote diversity and preserve the North American Model of Conservation of our wild spaces and animals.” We chat about diversity, equity, justice, and inclusion in hunting, how allies can step up and help, the HOC mentor program, and much more. Plus Jimmy shares his favorite hunting story and takes on some rapid-fire questions. Did you enjoy this episode? Are you taking value from ISC? 072 - His Best Shot: A Tribute to Conservationist Jim Posewitz

7/8/2020
On July 3rd, 2020, Jim Posewitz passed from this world on to the next grand adventure. Jim was a living legend and during the short time that I knew him, he deeply impacted my life. Along with an impressive career fighting for Montana outdoor legacy as a biologist for Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks, Jim authored numerous books on various aspects of hunting and conservation, founded Orion: The Hunter's Institute, was a founding member of the Montana Outdoor Hall of Fame, was inducted in the second class of said Hall of Fame, and the list goes on. Jim was the consummate voice in advocating for education and ethics in the hunting sphere. He will be missed. I hope he is somewhere in the mountains, rifle in hand. 070 - Racism and New Traditions

6/8/2020
"I stand at the end of no tradition. I may, perhaps, stand at the beginning of one.” Ayn Rand Today's episode will be a subdued one. My heart is breaking. I apologize if at times this message is hard to hear through my tears, but I can keep them in no longer. I don't have the answers to the problems that face our country around racism. As a former law enforcement officer my feelings are complex, to say the least. But one thing I can say is this a time for listening and learning. And once we know better we must do better. Thank you for listening to my thoughts. I believe that we have the capacity within us for great acts of goodness. I believe we can and should treat those who don't look like us with dignity and respect and equality. I have faith in us. Have faith in each other. Need help with your podcast?
