Episode 14: Creating Better Balance Between Humans and Technology in the Workplace with Suman Giri, Director of Global Data Science and Innovation at Merck

11/3/2021
Suman Giri, PhD in Advanced Infrastructure Systems and current Director of Global Data Science and Innovation at Merck, explains the fundamental challenges of technology adoption in most companies. As a technologist, Suman is no stranger to geeking out over technology and process automation, but he understands that if the end user is not involved in the conversation, then the chances of adoption are extremely low. He shares that true human engagement does not stem from a tool being rolled out but from the problem being solved. He believes that a successful technology roll-out with a high adoption rate will require a shift in how organizations are currently running their change management programs and that the step by step process for how to use a new tool should be the last part of the conversation with the end-user. He states, “this build and they will come mentality is a relic of the past.” Suman also provides the example of someone going to a conference, learning about a cool new piece of technology, and then bringing it back to their company to roll-out without first thinking about how it might fit into the bigger picture and how it might or might not align with other tools in place. He shares, “We reward having our hands on multiple things vs. doing one thing well (…) there is a focus on the tangible over the impact.” He wraps the conversation with a heavy focus on impact and why it is the most critical element to most decisions organizations make around their technological practices and digital transformations. Episode 08: A Mindful Approach to Life with Peter Callahan

8/11/2021
While the term mindfulness is commonly used as a failsafe for all things self-improvement, what does it actually mean and how do we know if we are truly living mindfully? During a conversation with Peter Callahan, Business Leadership Coach and Leadership & Engagement Director for Copper Beech Institute, we dive deep into the definition of mindfulness with very little reference to the actual word. Peter explains the impact of living a balanced life by moving from an achievement driven mindset to one of presence. The interview takes on more of a casual tone as two friends engage in dialogue and the sharing of personal experiences with growth and moving from cognition to action. Peter references Viktor Frankl and explains how the space between stimulus and response allows for awareness, even during times of heightened emotion. Peter shares tips on habit formation and replacement and explains the power of asking the right questions to change behavior and understand rather than reaffirm beliefs. This discussion covers the gamut from personal growth and self-reflection to the outward and external components of life. While some moments go deep, this episode is not without a set of very clear takeaways for building better habits and approaching situations, especially ones that might be challenging, with a clear head and thoughtful lens. Tom discusses the importance of a human first organization while sharing facts and examples. He discusses the connection from individual to organization and shares the building blocks to gain buy-in and commitment in culture change citing Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
