Negative Thots

Health & Wellness Podcasts

A silly podcast about women and their silly brains. Respectfully dedicating ‘that time of the month’ to men (for once). *Consider this a broad Trigger Warning* *Each week our thotful hosts Carley Eiden and Samara Suomi talk ‘mental illness shop’ with women (identifying and otherwise) of all backgrounds. Once a month we open the space for men’s mental health talk in our justifiably titled ‘That time of the Month’ segment. Negative Thots intent as a podcast is to encourage people to open up about their day-to-day life living with mental illness. With that openness comes a likelihood of somewhat difficult-to-digest discussions. Our goal is to create a safer, lighter, and sillier space to have conversations we don't normally have with our peers. With the topic in general comes heavy material. There will be deep discussions, jokes, stories, and theories that may be a little ~triggering~ to others. Some topics of discussion can be hard to hear, but we believe it's important to listen to the messages each guest brings with them. Listen with an open mind and heart as we explore the range of thots inside us all. (**use this warning for vanessa’s/all future episodes)

Taylor Dugger & Nina Davis: "Find community... and journal about it!"

10/16/2024
We're baaack! And it's 'That Time of the Month' (sorry were a little late). We are back in the Media22 studio! We brought Taylor Dugger and the occasional ho-host of Negative Thots, Nina Davis, all the way from Colorado. It's Negative Thots first threeway (interview)! Taylor Dugger is a comedian and producer of Bad Comedy; he is also a veteran who has been diagnosed with PTSD and chronic Depression. Nina Davis is a comedian and producer of Manitou Comedy & Festival; she's had many other titles along the way from death doula to cheese monger. She is on the ASD spectrum, and has spoken to NT before about her outdated ODD diagnosis and PDA, (again not the holding hands or kissing in public kind). They're back in WI traveling with our host Samara Suomi doing shows all over the midwest, to test our host's new hip. As well as to come into the old studio stomping grounds to revamp and resurrect Negative Thots! Let's get these thots back in your head! This week's revival episode revives old thots and new alike. We all sit down and talk what it's like leaving the military with a fun new brain chemistry, the search for community through comedy, how to change places that don't want to change, the sacrifices of sanity it takes to stay where you feel unwelcomed, the Colorado and Wisconsin pipeline, periods and so much more on this renewed episode of Negative Thots! Huge thanks to Corey Whitmore of Media22 and Radio22 studios for letting us in again while we were in town. The timing was perfect (I mean it is 'That Time of the Month'), and the studio looks amazing. Madison is blessed to have you. Deep in Thot

8/4/2023
Our host Samara strips down her sanity for another solo episode of Negative Thots! Our silly host has been open about living with bipolar throughout this podcast, but you can really hear the signs as we dive Deep into her Thots. Samara (over)shares her gratitude to studio 22, how the podcast is going to change in the near future, how she's going to change in the near future, leaving your job for the mountains, how to change your environment for the better, growth and what that means, and so much more on another solo episode of Negative Thots. Amber Peterson: "Make time for yourself... It's about to be your season premiere!"

7/25/2023
We're back in the studio trapped with our Negative Thots! This week Amber Peterson joins us for a family ties episode. Amber is a mom/boss lady/in the midst of mid-life indecision, just like all Americans! She also is related to Samara's partner. Family! Amber operates her family and job while her brain operates under the stress of social anxiety and general anxiety. She also feels the symptoms of depression at times, and has childhood traumas, (just like all Americans!?) Amber and Samara sit down over a family dinner with no food, just in-depth conversation about trying to maintain a balanced life while having a chemically imbalanced brain, losing your train of thot, watching your kids and phones age, being a mom living with teens (your own teens btw), finding stability as you go along, seasons of life and how they change, being fair to yourself even if your brain tries not to be, casually dreaming of a library in Ireland to yourself, and much, much more on this week's episode of Negative Thots! 7/16/2023
It's 'That Time of the Month' again here on Negative Thots! Everyone's favorite! This week our host is synced up with Shawn Vasquez, a comedian and friend of ours. Who performs all over the country, while his brain puts on its own performance of ADHD. This week our friends get right into it and spill the tea of how important sleep is, being an active kid who just can't stop, what happens when you take the routine out of your life, then how to get routine back into it in some way, sleep debt and how to pay it back (by sleeping! Go to sleep!), how to grow as a performer and person, accepting when it's time to change things in your life, getting your meds from (hopefully) a doctor, the importance of good people in your life, and oh yeah getting some damn sleep! That and so much more on this dream sequence episode of Negative Thots! 7/1/2023

Olivia is a Neuroscience Researcher, she learns about the human mind while she works with ADHD, Anxiety and Depression in her own mind. She can also relate (honorable mention) to symptoms of Complex PTSD. Olivia and Samara get right into it, with a fun little conversation about how having seizures as a kid and researching seizures as an adult have nothing in common, loving to learn because your brain's gotta go fast, desperately wanting to leave your hometown, getting betrayed by your own diary, how cool and chill it is coming out as lesbian in a conservative Christian town, finding family along the way, what you learn about yourself in polyamorous relationships, gay panic, loving yourself and so much more on another silly little episode of Negative Thots! ARJ: "Don't be afraid to ask questions... especially about cow udders!

6/25/2023
ARJ: "Don't be afraid to ask questions... especially about cow udders!" We're back on track with our thots in the studio. This week we are joined by a UW Grad student, and funny little guy; ARJ. ARJ researches hormones while their own body produces anxiety and ADHD. Rock on! Don't worry we get immediately into it, thankfully our host is a (semi) pro! Samara and ARJ sit down for a silly little discussion about being a cowperson, growing up in different middle-of-nowheres, realizing how learning can help, being big-ol' nerds about stuff, saying silly stuff because you have to, being a part of something, helping while you're here, being friends with your brain and other people, and so much more on this pretty upbeat episode of Negative Thots! Aristotle Awes: "The world needs your weird voice... Use it!

6/20/2023
It's 'That Time of the Month!' This time in the cycle we have Aristotle Awes contributing to our thots. A drag performer and comedian with Generalized Anxiety, Major Depression and ADHD. Samara and Aristotle combine their names and their brains to discuss; doing drag in front of your dad, being subtly Greek, what leads a person with anxiety to the stage, the importance of a stage outfit, grieving for family members, moving onwards and upwards, being proud of who you are, and every little thot in between on this philosophical episode of Negative Thots! Ashleigh Gradel: "You don't have to listen to your body... Only listen to Blazers!"

6/11/2023
We're back in the studio with all our Negative Thots! This time around we are joined by Ashleigh Gradel, a corporate girlie who tells jokes to feel alive sometimes. Ashleigh recognizes that 'gender dysphoria' is still, sometimes, considered a mental illness, so we open the conversation of what that means to transgender people these days. It's surprisingly optimistic! Listen up, as Ashleigh and Samara dive head first into deep end of gender identity, the significance of finding right blazer, how cool and chill it is growing up LGBTQ+ in the south, what it means to be pitch perfect, how lame and uncool it is to be misgendered, growing up as young surfer boys, starting comedy as a woman, finding your voice, owning a home to be sad in it, and so much more on this thotfully silly little episode of Negative Thots! Negative Thots Live! Nina Davis: "Go through it to get over it... unless it's a fish!"

6/4/2023
People at Persephone Grae's Cafe in Manitou Springs Co., were gathered around to hear all of our thots out-loud for the first time ever! Hopefully (and likely) not the last time! The live recording was part of Manitou Comedy Festival which was founded and produced by our guest Nina Davis. Nina is a comedian, show producer, improv performer, business woman, cheese monger, death doula, and good friend of our host Samara Suomi. Nina wears all of these hats while wearing a newer (informal-ish) diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum, and we get really deep into the process of diagnosing autism, particularly women. She is also open about her outdated diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and what PDA means in terms of autism, not holding hands in public. Samara and Nina catch up in front of a captive audience with an informative, yet silly conversation about the pricey process of being diagnosed with autism, adults calling kids who don't listen ODD, running a comedy festival with a brain that's always running, masking (no not the act of putting on an actual mask), what fish go in what metaphor, discovering yourself while also learning to love the self you discover, and much more on this LIVE(ly) episode of Negative Thots! Massive thanks to Nina for not only being courageous enough to open up in front of an audience, but for getting the audience there and everywhere else at Manitou Comedy Festival! You did it girl! A Businesswoman, Property Manager, Photographer, animal lover, and all-around good human. Although she is undiagnosed for any mental illness, she can relate to PTSD, dissociative amnesia, depression, and anxiety. #relatable Our host and guest have yet another thot provoking conversation about topics like managing properties and your sanity, how to sell houses to toddlers, bullying someone so much they decide to be a teacher, the alternative teachings of sarap-therapy, allowing yourself to feel, going with the flow, ruining Valentines Day by dying, overcoming trauma by going through it, and so much more on this uniquely optimistic episode of Negative Thots. This time around, our host Samara Suomi talks to herself but claims it's for the listeners, about so many things. She talks about the podcast and what it means to her (again), what possibilities lie ahead for the pod, community (not the TV show), how to think all the time without actually thinking, being bipolar, vacationing at mental hospitals, and way too much more on this behind the crazy curtain episode of Negative Thots! Jared is a Madison-based comedian, and fisheries biologist who is just an average guy right with GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder). This time around our host and our guest address the elephant in the room that is Jared's height, monks who order Starbucks, being an anxious guy with maybe too much Xanax, having a substitute therapist who only plays DVDs and comedy, and who supports it, being so hard on yourself that HR gets involved, meditating with anxiety, fish and their feelings and everything in between on this uninterrupted train of thot episode of Negative Thots! Skye Roventini: "It's okay to change... So go get a new notebook! It'll change everything!"

4/9/2023
We're back in the studio, letting our intrusive thots win. This week we have a winner of a conversation with Skye Roventini. A multi-faceted Psychology student, niche internet micro-celebrity, clown doll enthusiast, and autistic creature. Her words, not mine! Who juggles the life of a college student while also juggling Depression, anxiety, autism, insomnia, tourettes, and possibly bipolar and ADHD. Our host Samara and our guest Skye have a direct but very silly conversation about having a fun-filled history of mental illness, transitioning, de-transitioning, and everything in between, how to know if your therapist is the one, fun and easy psychological experiment sketches you can do at home, how crying on stage is still technically theater, and so much more on this psychological episode of Negative Thots. 4/3/2023
Blythe Ratzmann: "Speak up for yourself... and for God's sake, unionize strippers!" We're back after a longer than expected break! This week on Negative Thots, our host sits down with Blythe Ratzmann. A Construction Site Engineer, who breaks barriers (then probably rebuilds them) in a male dominated field. While she's hard at work, her brain has built Generalized Anxiety (GAD) and Major Depression for her, nice! We break our radio silence with a cool and calculated conversation about being a woman and engineer at the same time, the construction of construction sites, how everyone needs a Jerry in their life, teenage fantasies and why they're terrifying, why strippers should unionize, the fourth kind (of man), how to be a loud white guy and so much more on another thot provoking episode of Negative Thots! On another unusually positive episode, happy thots fill the studio with conversations about being a stylized therapist, how it's fine to let kids play with scissors as long as they can cut hair, knowing what you want to do in life; then doing it, how nature doesn't judge you, how much family matters (not the show, but definitely the dogs), being a positive person who loves what they do and so much more on this upbeat episode of Negative Thots! The post-human comedian and creator of the show/podcast/experience, known as High Concept (with Mike Jonjak). He runs the hit (and lit) show while his brain forces him to run with Chronic Depression. Our host Samara sits down with Mike and they get right into talking about your first formed memory being a real bummer, being mindful and medicated, how to move your sad body around until it feels something, different kinds of swimming pools that could save the world, how to stop being an angry millennial, what weed is good for, how to adopt vs shop for local metal kids, and so much more on this motivationally bleak episode of Negative Thots.
