The Naked Man on My Bus

5/5/2024
In this episode, Nina dives into a surprising encounter with a naked man on a London bus, using it as a springboard to discuss our societal desensitization. She explores how, bombarded by constant exposure to extreme situations and media oversaturation, we've developed a Teflon coating that allows too much to slide right off us without leaving an impact. From ignoring everyday absurdities to becoming numb to serious societal issues, Nina challenges listeners to reflect on what it means to truly see and engage with the world around us. Nina questions the normalization of disturbing trends and behaviors, from discrimination and abuse to the overlook of mental health issues. She argues that to make a change, we must first allow ourselves to be affected by what we witness. This episode is a call to peel back the layers of indifference, to find a balance between awareness and action, and to confront the chaos that might one day show up at our own doorsteps. Tune in for a thought-provoking discussion on "Every Shade" available now on Apple Podcasts and other streaming platforms. @ninaatimah @voueeskin

Let's All Pretend!

4/10/2023
Why bother trying to coerce people to manage their biases when we can all just pretend to like each other? This episode was inspired by a friend and her 'Start with Why' by Simon Sinek exercise book that I was forced into joining. What is the difference between your passions and purpose? Does it matter? How have you ended up where you are, loving what you love, doing what you do? What is the deal with Finnish Liquorice and how did I go from snorting loudly over a Futurama episode to being an advocate for change? Je ne sais pas! Expats this way! Immigrants that way!

2/18/2023
Expats, Immigrants, Refugees, Asylum seekers - all just words right? In this episode, Nina explores our use of terminology to build, to separate and, to divide. Where does the dichotomy begin and where does it end? Why are migrant domestic workers not expats? In the last episode, Sticks and Stones, we talked about the words we choose and what they mean. Here are two examples - expats and immigrants. Which one are you? Which one do you prefer being referred to as? Do you even care? Where do they go? Do they all end up at the English Channel? Is your country now being overrun by refugees? Is there a flood at your doorstep? Follow our journey to build an inclusive skincare line at www.voueeskin.com. Follow Nina @ninaatimah and @voueeskin.

Are you fair? Or very very fair?

2/1/2023
What is the obsession we have with skin tones? Why is the shade of your skin, marriage criteria and why are people so dissatisfied with their skin, that they take to creams, drugs, lotion and potions to shed their natural hue? In this episode, Nina rants a little bit about skin tones - the names we call people that refer to their skin...the gibberish people utter and some other stuff. “She is beautiful… for a dark girl”

12/14/2022
How many times have you heard that comment where a person's attractiveness is linked to the shade of their skin? What skin tones are allowed to be described as beautiful or attractive? Why do we even care about skin tones? Why, within a race, do we apply value to a person based on their skin tone? What does it mean for the kids you are raising? In this episode, Nina talks about colorism across Brown and Black skin tones, the skin whitening epidemic in Asia, the shame/desirability factor and how far we've come. With a cameo from Dr. Ebele O, we remember Delta Girls and ask ourselves if that much has really changed. For a detailed view of the concerning ingredients in these whitening products, have a read of this article on our website. We've spoken to people as we look to launch VOUEE, our skincare brand for melanated skin tones, and we had numerous views on this topic of skin whitening. We invite you to continue the conversation with us on IG - @voueeskin.
