Making The Magician's Daughter movie

Hello en Hallo, I'm Gerrie Timmerman and this is a new podcast series about my feature film project: The Magician's Daughter aka Disappearing Act.
This podcast will have episodes in English, but also in Dutch.

The movie is partly based on my life: The magician's daughter.
I am a filmmaker and daughter of the fairly unknown Dutch magician Timanini.
But the film is also, and not in the least, about the life of the Jewish magician Ben Ali Libi, who vanished in the Holocaust and how his life and mine influenced each other in unexpected ways.
The Sufi mystic and poet Rumi said: “What you seek, is seeking you.”
That perfectly describes what the movie The Magician’s Daughter is all about.
As the filmmaker has to overcome the challenges to find the truth behind a Jewish magician’s disappearance in WWII, she does not only find a magician, but also herself.
Did I give the ending away, is this a spoiler alert?
Definitely not, keep tuning in as I take you into the different tunnels of the magician’s rabbit hole. And who knows, you might find you in this story as well.
The podcast series will of course follow the search for the Jewish magician Ben Ali Libi, who seems to disappear every time we are getting close.
And it follows the filmmaker on her quest to get this movie made.
But we will also go into the subject matters from the movie.
These episodes will be called specials and cover these subjects:
Magic, Real Magic and Moviemaking.

Special # 2 – THE TRIP – THE WEIDMAN HOUSE

As I am on the road trying to produce my feature film, I use this time during the WGA writers’ and SAG Actors’ strike to record episodes for the podcast series, that will accompany my movie before, during and after it is produced.
As I can only tape them, wherever I am on the West Coast, the episodes are not always in a chronologically logical order. But they can stand on their own for now.
This episode of the podcast is with my American friend Lenna Weidman, daughter of artist David Weidman.
Staying at the magical house of artist David Weidman was a trip in itself. In this episode you hear everything about it, but we also dive into the life and art of her dad David Weidman.
His work and life was called whimisical and magical. No doubt that you recognize his designs from the 70’s, but it was also featured in the series Mad Men.
This house and the art in it was so impactful, that I decided to film a few bonus featurettes and it even a produced a Blooper. 😊 Enjoy.

Ep 2 - Tears over my bacon

What a strange title, you must think. But in the world of magic, nothing is what it seems. And not on this trip either.
Today I will tell you more about that.
Among other things, about how the help for this project came from an unexpected angle and how these solutions can come unexpectedly.
It has taught me not to immediately despair and certainly not to shed tears anymore
on my favorite American breakfast: Bacon and eggs…

En dan beginnen we nu echt aan de zoektocht naar de Joodse goochelaar Ben Ali Libi, welbekend van het gedicht van Willem Wilmink en de voordracht ervan door Joost Prinsen.
Ik neem jullie mee in de zoektocht door de jaren heen. Steeds als ik Ben Ali Libi leek te vinden, verdween hij weer en moest ik een andere weg inslaan. Zo leidde hij mij langs allerlei wegen, waarin ik hem en mezelf steeds beter leerde kennen.
Het bleek dat Ben Ali Libi niet zomaar een goochelaar was en hij mij, maar wellicht ook u op deze reis, het wonderlijke van het leven laat ontdekken.

Wat een rare titel, denk je vast. Maar in de wereld van de magie, is niets wat het lijkt.
En ook niet op deze reis. Vandaag vertel ik daar wat meer over.
Onder andere over hoe de hulp voor dit project in één uit onverwachte hoek en op onverwachte wijze kan komen.
